Sitting at the base of a tree, Devyn's hands were draped over her bent knees; a flask in one of them. Her green eyes were bright from the light of the fire- flickering and burning wildly. The dark makeup around her eyes only made them stand out more, but if one looked closely, the apparent glaze would be noticed. Taking another drink, Devyn leaned her back against the trunk of the tree. It was her birthday...yet, she felt like she had nothing to celebrate. She was surrounded by immature idiots drunkenly dancing and nearly falling into the fire. If she got lucky, a heard of centaurs would run through and scare them all away. Wrinkling her nose at the taste of whiskey, she stood up, balancing herself against the trunk of the tree. She felt like it was a good time to distance herself from the kids (that she was convinced were going to get run over by centaurs). She had only been walking a few minutes when she found a tree that had toppled over- climbing up to sit on the trunk. She could still see what was going on, but it was much more peaceful. Moving to lay on her back, Dev looked up at the stars, tilting her head up to take another drink. Hearing leaves crunch on the ground, Devyn hardly turned her head to look. "Why, yes. Please join me," She murmured neutrally, finally sitting up to see who it was. "Oh...hi," she spoke softer.

Honestly Riley just kind of wanted to go. He didn't have a date, as the rest of his friends seemed to. He just wanted to go and spend time in the forest with friends. Of course, the excitement wore off when he was there. Suddenly the overly loud crowds made him uncomfortable and he desired some place to just sort of chill a moment before he had to go and be social one more. It wouldn't take too long, just more than two people with him at a time was always a bit draining on his poor socially awkward self. He saw a tree and moved closer, interested in perching on it. It'd be a bit fun to see everything without having to deal with them too much. Riley noticed a figure a bit too late when she spoke. "Shit." He jumped slightly at her words. But she looked down at him and Riles blinked a few times, "Hello." The boy grinned, being friendly but not really knowing what to say to the girl sprawled on a log. "Can I sit?" the boy decided to ask. It was a good phrase to start with, right?

"'Shit...'" she repeated, sitting up more to look at him. "I mean, that wasn't what I was expecting as a hello, but it works." Dev grinned slightly before taking another drink, trying to see exactly who he was...and he was not a Slytherin. She was fairly certain that a lock of her hair was stuck on her cat ears, but she didn't move to get it unstuck. Inhibitions were slowly starting to go out the door. She was sick of all the sloppy drunks making out with each other; it was gross. They looked like they were trying to eat each others faces. His question cause her eyebrows to shoot up, surprised that someone as...sober as him would want to be at a drunken shit show. "I'm shocked, but I'm gonna go ahead and say yes." Devyn wasn't shy. She wasn't shy, especially when she was drinking or high. "You're surely here with someone, though..." Everyone else was, it definitely wouldn't surprise her if he had a girlfriend.

Her remark made him laugh. "You may have scared me a bit, sorry." He grinned and shrugged, realizing what sight he must be. Standing there in his costume garb. Looking like a muggle superhero's secret identity, he pulled the glasses off and set them in his pocket. They were cheap brand his mum sent him. And he might have had a superman shirt underneath. But the girl with the flawless skin and pretty smile was not about to know that. He clambered up with a furrowed brow. "With someone? Why would you say that?" He asked her, genuinely curious. The boy was with some friends, but it sounded like she meant a date and he didn't think that was a possibility as of late. He's probably a no-go for everyone in the school. Though he just didn't know a large amount of people. He was nice and all, sure. But that was generally the extent. He had issues breaking the barrier from acquaintance to friend. "What brings you over here?" He asked her, seeing more of her face closer than he was before.

Devyn smiled, finally deciding to fix the lock of hair caught on her ears. It was more of a drunken smile, but she had attempted it. That was good. "It's okay. I would have scared me, too." Settling with a grin, she patted the spot beside her, taking another drink. His costume was...well, she wasn't quite sure what he was supposed to be. He had taken his glasses off and tucked them away. She wasn't sure if they were real or not, she hadn't seen him around enough to know if he actually wore glasses in class. "Uhh...well," Devyn pursed her lips. "A good 90% of people here have a date or they're hooking up with randoms. You just seem like...you wouldn't be alone." She, on the other hand, could draw people in, but she always hurt them. Not even intentionally. She felt like her life was poisonous. He seemed so genuine and true and she was damaged goods. "Good question." Taking another swig, she discarded the now empty flask over her shoulder. "For starters...it's my birthday. However, I knew there'd be free booze." Dev grinned, pursing her lips. "I'm Devyn, by the way."

He laughed, "It's the cat ears, I think." Though he was just teasing her. He had a cat of his own, though refrained from telling her that, because she probably did not give any fucks about that. He was being ridiculous. It was just a girl, he had friends that were girls, after all. He considered her response with a slight smile, "To be fair, neither do you." He shrugged, "And no. Not really the hooking up type, I suppose." She was lovely, and had a nice smile, and he was completely an idiot for saying what he did, but it was out there and he would.not.blush. Not if he could help it anyway. He listened genuinely to what she was saying. Her grin was contagious, drunk as it was and Riley smiled, "Nice to meet you, Devyn. And happy birthday. If I'd known I may have brought you a cake. Though not cooked by me, because I'm shit in a kitchen." He smiled, "Oh, and I'm Riley. Shy-guy extraordinaire." He placed his hand out to her, now that it was empty from the flask, surely they could shake hands?

Devyn shrugged her shoulders, nodding her head- her grin still in place. "Yeah, I could see that. A vicious cat." The last part was in a mock-serious tone. Oh, he was a charmer. If only he knew. "Guys usually want to 'hook up' with me, though. I'm not that girl." Oh, she'd snog him. But would she drunkenly sleep with him? Not likely. He didn't seem to be that type, anyway...which was rare. "You're not gay, though, are you?" Devyn arched an eyebrow. "Scratch that, I don't get a gay vibe from you." She smiled, clasping her hands together. His next comment made her laugh. Would he have really brought a cake to a stranger? Maybe he is gay... "You and me both. I'd be an awful housewife. Miserable, really, in more ways than one." She'd let him think she was joking, but she was completely serious. If he spent more time with her, he'd leave, too. Noticing the hand outstretched to her, her eyebrows (once again) shot up into the air. He really was a gentleman. A rarity. "Wow, wonderful manners, Riley. Must come from a pureblood family...they drilled those mannerisms into us." Her voice was slightly bitter at the end. Not towards him, but the disdain about being a pureblood was evident. It definitely wasn't all shits and gigs growing up. It was quite brutal to have strict parents...hence the "rebellion." Terribly cliche, she was. "But it is actually nice to meet you. Honest."

She had a good sense of humor, it was nice not talking to a girl who shut him down because in their minds he was hitting on them. "You never really do know with cats, do you?" He smiled. "One minute they're totally fine and the next you've three scratches and a need for stitches." Riley tried to joke, his own cat wasn't bipolar but his ex girlfriends was. Boy that cat would've probably killed riley if he'd let it. It's just completely bipolar, however, as it would ask for a pet, then turn around and bit you. Suddenly he was gay in her mind. "Oh. Um." He blinked a few times, running an embarrassed and through his hair. "Uh, no. Definitely not gay." Well. She backtracked but he wanted to clarify anyway. he was slightly humiliated and suddenly wondering how many girls assumed the same. Then he added, "Just socially awkward. Saying the wrong things constantly. Here's your warning." He smiled, trying to lighten up the hitch in the conversation. Oh god. gay. That one was going to stick with him now. "Totally, my housewife skills..." He made a tisking noise, "Sub par at best. Think I'll just have to live off of microwavable food for the rest of my life." Probably wasnt' helping the gay argument, but he couldn't get much worse with this one, so he hardly minded. He blinked a moment his hand still outstretched in a terribly awkward way. , "I can't even remember if we're pureblood or not. My mum's a bit of a nutter for politeness, though. Her family is sort of uppity. Part Veela, which I hope I dodged, jury is still out on that one." There he goes brain farting again. She didn't want to know his life story, he needed to stop talking now. Besides, she ended up not taking his hand so he awkwardly dropped it to his lap and looked over the party. "Seems odd they let this party happen. Drinking. In the forbidden forest. And there are kids under the age of fourteen here." He shook his head. "It's like they're asking for someone to get lost." It wasn't his scene, that's certain. But he also didn't mind if it was other people's. He just felt bad for the impressionable kids who now thought this was the best way to spend time.

Devyn grinned. He was completely the opposite of her, but it was interesting. This might end up being bad for him. "You know," she began. "my Serval cat...which you have probably read about because you seem intelligent...comes up to my shoulder when I'm sitting. His name is Buki, he's a doll." So, maybe she shouldn't have said the gay comment. However, Dev didn't mean it to be rude, even though she thinks she thinks she embarrassed him. Her green eyes stayed on him as she watched him fidget nervously. A twinge of guilt started to grow inside her. "You know...I only said that because I'm not used to guys being so...nice and forthcoming to me." Her voice was soft as she spoke. She had almost been completely side tracked before she heard his comment, making her laugh. "I'm really good at burning food if that counts for anything. Really impressive, I know." Her lips turned into a grin as the forest around him continued to spin around him. "I am a Nott. So, naturally, my family consists of blood purist pricks." She wrinkled her nose. "If you part-Veela, I wouldn't be surprised. You're quite handsome." The alcohol...she was starting to feel it. She needed to lay down...so she did. With her head on his lap. Nice to meet you, Riley. "Oh, you are definitely a Ravenclaw. Don't worry, they'll be puking all the way back to the castle...probably on their friends. It'll end terribly." Letting out a sigh, Devyn attempted to blow a strand of hair out of her face. "I had my first drink when I was ten..." she murmured. If he was shy before, he was probably petrified, now.

A smile stretched over his face, "nice to know there's good cats out there. Mine's nice too. much smaller, but still a good cat." He was not going to share what his cat was named afterall, she probably had no idea who redbeard was. Nor did he want to be known to be the gay pirate boy. "Really?" He wondered what other guys were out there. He knew so many good ones, then again their behavior could change depending on who they were around. In fact, Riley wouldn't be surprised what a pretty face and alcohol does to a guy. It made him sick to his stomach. "Here's to exceptions then." He chuckled, considering saying more, like she'd meet a nice guy and all. But that was over the top for a first meeting. Besides, things were going smoothly, he didn't want to come off as someone who lectured other people about their lives. "Burnt toast is actually the best thing ever. And burned popcorn." He said, grinning, "Honestly. I can't get over it. Cant' cook it correctly, which is good because I have nothing to compare it to." Riley grinned at her, but it fell to a soft smile hearing about her family. Obviously she didnt' like them too much and he felt bad about that. "You seemed to come out alright." He said lightly, hoping he was not overstepping bounds. After all, when he was trying to be cool he might say the first thing that comes to mind and totally fail miserably at it. Her compliment he took from the alcohol and he chuckled, thanking her but otherwise not really responding to it. He could be a very miniscule part veela. 1/8? 1/16? He didn't actually care too much about it. Because it seemed like it was meant to attract the opposite sex using charm and natural aura. He had neither. Therefore, his ungraceful stumbling of words proved his lack of genetics. She laid down then. He thought it was impossible to do so on a tree but somehow she managed. Riley looked down at his lap, now self-conscious of potentially smelling like the campfire, or worse. Why did he have to think of these things to remember later? She didn't remark on the scent, so that was good. He cleared his throat and pursed his lips, "Sounds unbelievably unpleasant. Never got to the point of puking, myself. But I took care of a few of my friends the last bash we had." He chewed on the inside of his lip. "Ten?" He asked, curious how different other people's lives were from his. "How'd that happen?" He asked her genuinely curious.

A small laugh escaped her lips, suddenly very amused that they were still talking about cats. "Yep, Buki is my protector." Devyn explained herself...mainly because of the expression on his face. It kind of made her feel bad, which was different. She had been drinking, it must be the drunk sympathy. "Really. When guys realize that I'm not easy, they suddenly become aggressive. The chivalrous are a dying breed...so, congratulations. You are one of the few." She wanted to ask why he was single, but honestly, that always just led to drama. If she was at the party, the girl would probably wander over and find them sitting there and turn into a raging bitch. Dev wasn't about any of that. "Ewww, burnt popcorn..." she murmured, giggling. "That's the worsttt." Devyn didn't particularly like talking about her family...when she was sober. She loved her sisters, but she didn't agree with how they were raised. In fact, she blamed a lot of what she did, on how she was raised. "You have a lot to learn, Riley Wolpert. Not everything that glitters is gold." He was handsome and she told him so. The chance of him showing veela traits would be slim to none. She figured that he was 1/8 at the most...so, that left him with good looks. The drunken haze had fallen over her, resulting in her laying her head on his lap. He was not relaxed...at all. "Oh, I've been that bad before. When you're constantly around free booze as a child...and adult...you grow to tolerate and sometimes depend on it." Devyn tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "Not that I depend on it. But my father does. ANYWAY..."

A small smile found it's way on his lips and he chuckled, "You don't strike me as the type that needs protection." she had the air of being just entirely strong. There were girls he felt the need to cuddle until they were safe and happy, but she didn't really fit into that category. She had a past, that much was obvious, but she saw things that he probably knew nothing about. He made a face, "Well, I'm sorry for them. And point them out, I'll give them a nice knuckle sandwich." He said, somewhat joking, but the rage that started to rise in his chest at those sort of people was anything but a joke. He looked around briefly to catch sight of Winnie, but she probably understood his need to wander off. He can only take so much social interaction. He'd return and talk to them. As for now, he just needed a bit more quiet time and he was enjoying the conversation more than he had originally thought. "And not all that is valuable is gold." He countered quietly, thinking about it. There were so many things that were astronomically more important to him, in particular, than anything material oriented. Very slowly, Riley started relaxing to the placement of her head. Maybe he didn't quite trust himself. It wasn't like there's been an incident before. But. Well, he's heard of other people's incidents. Riley nodded, "I can see that. I've never acquired the taste, I suppose." He'd probably look like a fool if he did.

The smile that formed on Devyn's lips matched his. "You're very observant. What else can you tell about me?" Curiosity killed the cat...hopefully it wasn't Buki. Moving to lay on her back, she looked up at him; her green eyes bright and dilated. His next comment threw her off, however, causing her to laugh. "Would you legitimately hit them? I can't see you doing that, but I will gladly point the lot out for you. They'll probably say some made up, nasty things, though." Devyn wrinkled her nose. She wasn't entirely sure what would happen when she blacked out, but she knew it wasn't always good. Hence the nasty comments from...well, guys that would or wanted to take advantage of her. She felt him relax slightly, which made her feel more comfortable. Her once wide eyes now fell closed, focusing on the distant chatter and the crickets around them. "This just got deep..." she murmured. "But you are correct...again. I wish other people weren't so blind and could see that money isn't everything. Material things...or material people, for the matter." Devyn almost wanted him to rub her head like a cat, but if he did that, she'd probably pass out. At least she wouldn't have to worry about him taking advantage of her. Opening her eyes, she looked up at him once more. "You're better off without it. Trust me. It's a crutch." She used it as a crutch. She used many things as a crutch. Letting out a sigh, she stood up- the blood rushing to her head; reaching for the fallen tree trunk for balance- a laugh escaping. "And dizziness...is awful. I'll be crawling back to the dungeons."

He looked at her and the sudden influx of her attention on him made Riley uncomfortable. What could he come up with now? He wasn't that observant. Not to the extent that she obviously thought. He tilted his head, "How about you tell me something about yourself instead?" Riley grinned, hoping that was an appropriate response. He was socially awkward, and pretty please with how quickly he diverted that question. His eyes looked over the woods then. He still didn't feel very comfortable having this here. This party couldn't be a good idea. Nothing about it seemed right. Her question made him laugh slightly, afraid to laugh too much to disturb her placement on his lap. "I would legitimately hit them." He affirmed, smiling at her but then frowned, "They need to pay for it somehow." And sometimes Karma just didn't do it's job right. He nodded, it got serious fast. "It's almost a waste to put time and effort gaining something that won't give back. Money just takes, it isn't worth it." He never wanted to strive towards something that would, in turn, poison him. She went to fall and Riley reached out and took her arm, just in case. "I can help you back?" He asked, looking at her. Was she even trying to leave? He couldn't tell.

Devyn blinked, unsure of how to process his question. It was simple. However, she wasn't one to talk openly about herself to anyone, really. "I'm really not that interesting, I promise you." She grinned slightly, being polite instead of rude. Letting people in, generally didn't end well...for either parties. She was a mess, her life was a disaster. The last thing she needed was good people getting hurt...and he was genuine. She knew he was genuine. He was so cautious of her and what was going on around them. He may have not been observant, but she was. The laughter that escaped and the smile that formed was rare. "Can you be my bodyguard all the time?" she joked, her smile fading as she saw and heard him become serious. "You'd be punishing me, too. I'm equally to blame." Devyn had stood up, laughing not because something was funny, but because she nearly fell; thanks to her drunken stupor. Riley's arm quickly reached out to catch her and she leaned into him slightly- her face sobering. "I, um...Yeah. I'd appreciate that, actually." Standing up a little straighter, she grinned, looking down at her feet before hearing an odd noise. "Did you..? Did you hear that?" Dev froze in place, hearing the all too familiar sound of apparition. Her hold on his arm tightened slightly, the sound of her shallow breathing ringing through her ears as the forest continued to spin. "Riley..." she breathed, hesitant. That's when she heard screams.
